Save the Red Squirrels!
05/10/2008 by Chris Prettejohn.

I’ve
seen a red squirrel on the Isle of Arran, Scotland and on the Isle of
Wight. Unfortunately they’re a rare sight these days due to the
aggressive, bullies that are the grey squirrels, a North American
import.
So what can we do to help. Well according to this BBC report we can report sightings during squirrel week on the Save our Squirrels website which runs from the 4th to the 12th October.
Want to find out more about red squirrels then visit this BBC link

01/10/2008 by Chris Prettejohn.

I’m fascinated by future energy projects which are low carbon and potential to save our planet. This looks to be the possible future of solar energy. The sun being focused onto a solar cell and very cheap to manufacture. The faq provides answers to a lot of questions. Watch this space.. Cool Earth..

Save the forests - WWF
Watch for traffic when using your iPOD!
This is a great set of adverts from around the world which get you thinking. It also underlines the whole globalisation issue as I recognise most of the logos and companies despite the fact that the majority aren’t from the UK!

Teaching People in Bangladesh about Climate Change
14/09/2008 by Chris Prettejohn.

Bangladesh is at the frontline of the global warming scenario that is facing us all. The Bangladesh govenment has to deal with a situation where only 43% of the country is literate (CIA World Factbook) and the definition of literacy is the ability to read and write a simple sentence. As such trying to communicate the idea that there is an enhanced greenhouse effect as a result of over consumption by the developed nations of the world and an increasing desire of the developing nations to match the progress of develped nations is difficult. The Bangladesh goverment has come up with a well known solution of using basic imagery, theatre and songs to get across the ways to deal with climate change.
The Guardian newspaper has a selection of these pictures here.
My sister worked as a mid wife in rural India in the 90’s and was employed in a similar fashion training and educating rural communities, in particular women, in basic medical care through the use of simple diagrams and pictures.

Hybrid Plug In cars!
11/09/2008 by Chris Prettejohn.

The future is beginning to look exciting and realistic for hybrid cars. Takes two hours to recharge the car though and then it gives you a range of about 60miles on electric

Costa Rica Red Eyed Tree Frog
08/09/2008 by Chris Prettejohn.
A critically endangered red eyed stream frog has been filmed for the first time by naturalists from the University of Manchester, Chester Zoo and Costa Rica. The article is here
Having lived in Costa Rica for two years I always have a soft touch for stories about this incredibly beautiful country.

This is a picture of a frog I took in Costa Rica on our guides foot. The amazing thing is not just the colours but how small it was.

Impacts of Global Warming
25/08/2008 by Chris Prettejohn.

Two excellent graphs from Nature magazine which show the effect of Global Warming based on a variety of scenarios.
The first is the global impact
The second regional impact by continent.
The second is rgional impactThe consequences of a 4C rise would be catastrophic and 2C would be disastrous for large areas of the earth, particulary the higher latitudes.
