Beautiful Sea Creatures

We know more about the surface of the earth than we do of our own ocean.  What other astonishing animals are there lying undiscovered?

These beautiful animals are called Nudibranchs which are soft bodied, shell-less molluscs or their scientifc term of sea slugs.  When you see how beautiful some of them are you’ll realise how I find it amazing that they belong to the same group of animals that eat all the plants in my garden.

Fusion and lasers creating energy

Save the Red Squirrels!

I’ve
seen a red squirrel on the Isle of Arran, Scotland and on the Isle of
Wight.  Unfortunately they’re a rare sight these days due to the
aggressive, bullies that are the grey squirrels, a North American
import.

So what can we do to help.  Well according to this BBC report we can report sightings during squirrel week on the Save our Squirrels website which runs from the 4th to the 12th October.

Want to find out more about red squirrels then visit this BBC link

Cool Earth Solar Energy Plants

I’m fascinated by future energy projects which are low carbon and potential to save our planet.  This looks to be the possible future of solar energy.  The sun being focused onto a solar cell and very cheap to manufacture.  The faq provides answers to a lot of questions.  Watch this space.. Cool Earth..

A critically endangered red eyed stream frog has been filmed for the first time by naturalists from the University of Manchester, Chester Zoo and Costa Rica. The article is here

Having lived in Costa Rica for two years I always have a soft touch for stories about this incredibly beautiful country.

Impacts of Global Warming

Two excellent graphs from Nature magazine which show the effect of Global Warming based on a variety of scenarios.

The first is the global impact
The second regional impact by continent.

The second is rgional impactThe consequences of a 4C rise would be catastrophic and 2C would be disastrous for large areas of the earth, particulary the higher latitudes.

Earth Trends Website

The Earth Trends website is an interesting website which would be very helpful for researching any key environmental issue. As they say in their blurb its a website which looks at the environmental, social and economic changes and trends that will affect our world. A typical article would be about the ever increasing problem of the world’s rubbish and where to put it.

Check out the research topics on the left hand menu which include Climate and Atmosphere, Population, Health and Well being and Coastal and Marine Ecosystems.

There’s also a podcast!
