Impacts of Global Warming

Two excellent graphs from Nature magazine which show the effect of Global Warming based on a variety of scenarios.
The first is the global impact
The second regional impact by continent.
The second is rgional impactThe consequences of a 4C rise would be catastrophic and 2C would be disastrous for large areas of the earth, particulary the higher latitudes.

Scorched Earth

An interesting story from Earthweek about a patch of earth in southern California which has, for some reason, increased to a temperature of 433 degrees. It could be due to the burning of hydrocarbons under the surface such as natural gas or oil. It has caused some forest fires too. Attempts to control it have included injecting water into the ground

Olympic Games Medal Count Map

This is a brilliant animated map sequence from the New York Times that visualises which countries have won Olympic medals over the last 100 years. A great demonstration of a topological map as it disregards the traditional way of showing maps to scale and detail in the interest of clarity of communicating relational information. The London Underground is another topological such map.
