Why was the Cyclone in Burma so deadly?

The National Geographic has a good article explaining the causes of Cyclone Nargisand why it was Burma's wost natural hazard ever. One of the main reasons for it to have such a catastophic effect was the removal of mangrove swamps to be replaced with shrimp farms and rice paddies. The mangrove swamps are one of nature's bes defenses against violent storms.
